NL002 – VxLAN Terminology

Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN) is a virtualization technology that encapsulates MAC-based OSI Layer 2 Ethernet frames within Layer 4 UDP packets, using 4789 as the default IANA-assigned destination UDP port number.

There can be a maximum of 16 million VXLANs within the same administrative domain, while maintaining the same MAC address space.

Data center networks often use VXLAN to extend VLANs across multiple physical networks.
